“Password Protect” a Google Form

Inputting your classroom data with Google Forms still not easy enough for you? Have your students do it! But what if those students enter the wrong data or try to manipulate their XP count by sneaking in a submission after class? You can “password protect” your Google Form using an advanced feature called Data Validation. Just follow these easy steps:

  • Create a text question called Password or Secret Code.
  • Select Advanced settings from the bottom left corner.
  • Check the box for Data Validation.
  • Select “Text” and “Contains”
  • Put your Password in the TEXT field.
  • You MUST enter a custom error message like “Access Denied” Otherwise it will report “Text must contain ‘yourpassword'”
  • Check the box to make it a required question.Screen Shot 2014-10-14 at 12.06.06 AM

That’s it!  Now students can fill in their own XP, grades, or scores and all you have to do is enter your password and click the Submit button. It doesn’t get much easier than that. Combine this with my XP Calculator and Leaderboard to simplify data collection in your gamified classroom.

*There is a more advanced way involving the “Regular Expression” feature if you are looking for a more exact password solution and not just a text contains solution. Here is a link to a video on that.
